Freedom from Spiritual Manipulation

Oftentimes, especially in Africa a young man or a young woman about to get married will be asked to go to church or the pastor to seek divine perspective on whether the person he or she desires to get married to is good or bad In some cases, the pastor will tell the lady or the young man to bring the names of three prospects out of which the pastor will pick the best among the three for him or her, In some other cases, the parent of the man or woman will be the one who would make this enquiry on behalf of their child Is the marriage going to be good? Will they have children? Will the two of them live long? Will they be wealthy or successful? Will they get divorced or be together for life? Will my son find fulfillment in this union? Will my daughter find joy in this union? This practice is rampant in all religions, this practice is called Divination.

It is not the way God intends for believers to see Him or deal with Him. Divination is an enemy of relationship, It excludes God from the day-to-day life of the believer because if God is in the day-to-day life of a believer, he or she wouldn’t need a third party to help him or her ask anything of the Lord God would have been involved in the process right from the outset through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The mindset divination gives those who engage in it, it the mindset of someone serving an alien God whose language he or she cannot hear or know by himself for this reason, the pastor, prophet, alfa, spiritualist, or whatever title the person bears becomes the intermediary between the individual and God bringing him or back into the Old testament and traditional religion’s mode of operation while abandoning the finished work of Christ and the Holy Spirit completely.

This then gives such “spiritual figures” the power to manipulate the believer by claiming whatever they tell the believer is directly from the Lord. Some believers are so spiritually lazy and inept that they don’t feel complete without their spiritual consultant in their lives, they cannot pray for themselves, meditate, or be led by the Holy Spirit. They are sitting ducks and their life’s decisions are being taken for them by someone whose only interest in them is actually all about money. Spiritual consultants do not consult for free, they are descendants of Ballam of Peor they get paid in cash and in-kind for their spiritual overwatch. Some blatantly insist those who come to see them pay them in advance for consultancy, the argument for this goes thus “If you go to a hospital won’t you get a card and pay for it, or if you are seeing a therapist will you not be charged by the hour?”

Others ask you to pick a financial project in their church or ministry and do this in exchange for their prophetic consultations. Others tell you they will fast and pray for you in exchange for a certain amount of money as payment. Politicians like keeping a lot of them on their payroll, fearful people keep these spiritual consultants in business. There are a lot of them than there should be, especially with the expansion of the gospel in the last fifty years.

The problem lies with those who refuse to read the Bible for themselves or those who even after the reading have refused to practice what was clearly simply written out as the new life in Christ and the liberty of the Spirit that it has given to the believer.

Diviners are mostly con artists, if you meet anyone of them who actually can fortune tell, he or she is possessed by a demon and acting as its agent. They invent enemies for people just to keep them in perpetual fear and woeful disposition so that they can continue to be relevant.  Some African churches especially have these bands of prophets who were meant to be “seeing” for other members while the members remain in perpetual ignorance of the ways of the Spirit. They breed diviners and label them as prophets, this is not in line with the principles and doctrines of Christ every believer is a prophet unto himself and a minister of the gospel.

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the 120 in the upper room, it later came upon the 3000 Peter prayed for, the Ethiopian Eunuch, Cornelious, and his family, and has always dwelt in the believer since then till now The ordination and calling of people into the office of the prophet in the Church is for administrative purposes so that the church will be stirred in the right direction as ordained by the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not to render some believers spiritually impotent while vultures pick them to pieces in the name of spiritual consultation We have seen how manipulative diviners take advantage of people who are gullible and defenseless in many ways, a young lady was told to take off her clothes so that a prophet could anoint her body to remove all the spirits she had on her that were stopping her from getting a husband. A lady’s mother went to meet a consultant to find out if the daughter’s marriage to a rich young man would be good and the consultant told her the man would die in less than two years. The lady’s mother told her daughter to keep away from the young man. Within a year, the same young man was married to the consultant’s daughter.

A Christian knows his or her tomorrow is glorious simply through the leading of the Spirit, he or she does not need a soothsayer to determine what his or her tomorrow will be like When a Christian is told to gather morning dew, bring a ram, burn palm leaves, light a candle, bathe with some special soap, use a particular perfume or powder, offer any form of sacrifice in the name of appeasing a demon, ancestral spirits or whatever issues, he or she is no longer walking by the Spirit or by Faith.

Divination exposes a believer to a realm of darkness he or she has already been protected from since he or she came into the Kingdom of light through Christ. This is why Christians prophesy, we prophecy to deliberately frame the future so that we live in a preordained reality while in this world.

We do not seek prophecy from anyone to know our tomorrow, we frame our tomorrow with our own words, we live today as led by the Spirit, and our decisions are constantly guided by the Holy Spirit all the days of our lives. This is how the believer lives an upward and forward life all the days of his or her life.

A believer who lives like this will have no fear of anything and will never be a victim of anybody’s manipulation. This is the first step towards living the ZOE life.
