Melting Genes

Melting Genes

Her story was a clumsy one
She rarely told anybody what
her life had been like since she
was a baby
She was the only child of her
mother
As she grew older, she came to
see her mother as someone
with a big mental affliction
She didn't see the problem as
this while she was growing up
She saw it as normal
Her mother flies off the handle
once in a while or several times
in a while
Nobody could really state was
the trigger was
She would be fine and smiling
one minute, the next she would be
a raving lunatic
It was the challenge that made
her father quit the marriage
He was afraid her mother was
going to stab him to death in his
sleep one day
He said he saw her at least three
days in the bedroom while he was
asleep holding a knife
She didn't threaten him in any way
but he was sure she would do it
The only thing she counted against
her father was letting her mother
take her despite knowing that she
wasn't of a sound mind
Her father claimed he did it for his
peace of mind
She felt that was a little selfish
Leaving her with her mother was
the worst thing ever
Her mother worked with the government
hospital as a midwife
She was quite good at the job but
it seemed all the trauma she witnessed
replays themselves on her mind once
she got home
Her mother would be in a strange mood
and sometimes howl to the moon
all night
The neighbours knew this and nobody
did anything
It was as if the society had condemned
her to be raised in a madhouse
Her father remarried and kept his
distance (He relocated to Lagos from
Ibadan with his new wife)
Her mother's parents and relatives
knew about the problem
Everybody turned a blind eye
She was in primary three ar Army
Children school, Iwo-Road, Ibadan
when Iya Dada, a popular lunatic
who was roaming the streets around
Iwo Road axis was ambushed by
the some military men and her
son Dada, was taken from her at
about six years of age
She saw the operation as it was
carried out plainly in the afternoon
She could still hear the agony in
the voice of the mad woman as her
son was whisked into a vehicle and
driven away at top speed
Everybody agreed it was for the best
The boy had fed off the waste bins
and roamed the street long enough
He had no future with his mad mother
She wondered why nobody did the
same for her
Her mother's malady was often on
than off
Her mother saw things, spoke to
imaginary beings, threw things violently
and randomly and would throw a
fit at everything
The neighbours called her mother
"Bose Alaagana" or "Bose Olodeori"
both terms meant "Bose the mental"
From the day she turned 12, her
mother would return from work
everyday and command her to take
off her panties
She will hand the pant over
Her mother would smell and taste
it with her tongue and return it to
her
She didn't know what her mother
was doing until she grew a little
bit older
She realized her mother was trying
to smell or taste semen in her
panties
The fear of her mother smelling anything
that could get her killed kept her
far away from boys
She didn't even try to be friends with
any
The shame of having to explain to
anybody who her mother was and
why she was that way she crippling
She somehow survived long enough
to leave for the polytechnic at the
age of 19
She was finally free of her mother's
madhouse.
Her mother was committed into a mental
health care facility a year later
her mother was 43 years old when she
was committed to the facility
In her opinion, it ought to have been
done sooner
She got into her first relationship at
the age of 20
It was a disaster
She didn't understand boundaries
She didn't know he could have
female friends, classmates, or
relatives
She didn't have any of those!
They got into arguments all the
time
The relationship lasted only two
months
She knew something was wrong with
her
She always felt this boiling emotion
inside her when she was around him
She didn't know if it was excitement
or fear or nerves
It was a terrible two months
She consoled herself that it was
her first time and she would do with
someone else
She met the "someone else" a year
later
The relationship lasted five months
It went very well for the first two
months until he came to visit her at
the female hostel and one of her
roommates commented on how fine
he was
The comment spooked her badly
She suddenly felt he was just toying
with her emotions and had no plans
for her beyond getting into her skirt
The relationship nose-dived after
that episode
She simply couldn't see him as a guy
who just wanted to be with her
The seed that was planted in her
refused to be unplanted
By the fifth month, they had stopped
talking to each other
It was terrible
By the time she crossed over to the
University through Direct Entry
she discovered the same pattern
that she loathed in her mother
She could blackout for three or four
hours in a week
Whenever she came to herself, she
was usually far from home, roaming
the street aimlessly
It was like an attack of epilepsy
it struck without any warning and  in
a very public and embarrassing way
Everybody in her hostel knew about
her situation
Sometimes after coming to herself
and returning to the hostel, she would
be told tales of how she suddenly
snapped and did one crazy thing
or the other
Twice she threw a knife at someone
and she almost drowned her aunty's
baby once when she went to spend
the holidays with her aunt's family
She was taken to so many places
The doctors called it early onset of
something and the traditional healers
did whatever it is they felt should
be done but nothing worked
She managed to graduate
She was posted to Niger State
for her NYSC
She met a Medical doctor at the
church
He was a Sunday School teacher
He fell in love with her at first sight
it was as if it was because of him
that her feet were ordered into the
church
He did everything to convince her
of his serious intentions
She knew what he saw
Like her mother, she was exceptionally
endowed with the looks and figure
that will intoxicate any man
She had seen her looks drive many
men crazy
But she was unconnected with the
beauty within
It made people pity her and cry
for her whenever she got the episode
Her aunty had told her to get a
man to impregnate her as soon as
possible so that she can have a
child
It was the same counsel they gave
er mother
Everybody will desert you because
of this condition but if you have
a child you wouldn't have to go
through life alone
The advice seemed solid but she
didn't want her child to end up
hating her
She remembered the way her father
used to describe her mother as
"Faworaja" or "Were Alaso"
implying that her mother deceived
or tricked him into marrying her
by her looks
She decided to tell the doctor the
whole truth
She wanted to have a child or children
for him but she wanted him to take
custody of the children and get
married to someone else
because of her condition
She had been told she has about ten
to fifteen productive years
before she might have to be
committed to a psychiatric hospital
She was already twenty-eight and
taking some drugs to slow down the
progress of the affliction
She told the doctor everything and
her plan to love and be loved
for a few years before she loses
everything
The doctor laughed and told her
he believes she could be cured
She laughed off the suggestion
She had been told by several experts
that it was hereditary and had no
cure
She had seen her mother battle it
to no avail
The clinical trials being conducted
abroad had shown no improvement
on the condition
She was resigned to her fate
Infact, she had hoped she would
die single and not pass on the
misery to another generation but
she had been informed that the
probability of passing it on is 50%
and her children may not have it
She was banking upon that and
trusting to hope as she laid it
all bare to him as her confidant and
friend
The doctor heard her out and agreed
to her terms but he insisted they
have to get married so that he
will have the power of attorney to
carry out her instructions when
the times comes
On October 1, 2019, one year
and three months after they got
married, they traveled to Lagos
to attend the first Homo Christus
conference of GSWMI
They got to the venue early, just
before the rain started
The conference started
Hands were laid on her a total
of seven times during and after
the conference by @eyitayofelix
@Dawson @femioladehin
and @gbengawemimo
She expected to fall down and
scream or run or faint or something
All she did was cry helplessly
for hours
She cried from 4pm while they were
driving to the hotel after the
conference until the next morning
She didn't know what to call it
Water kept streaming out of her
eyes as she vibrated and felt chills
all over her body
They flew to Abuja the following day
and returned to their base by road
She noticed she was pregnant a
week later
She went for antenatal
There was a drug they ordered for
her from the USA
She was to be placed on it because
of the baby
It was meant to isolate the gene
responsible for the illness and
ensure it didn't thrive in the fetus
She had to run to some tests before
starting the treatment
The test will help determine the
dosage and measure it's effectiveness
The test was done several times
Each time, the German medical
consultant attending to her looked
more puzzled than the last
She spent thirteen hours and thirty
four minutes in the hospital
Even her husband grew impatient
At the end of the day, the specialist
concluded that she had been wrongly
diagnosed of the ailment
She was 100 % normal and therefore
there was no need for the treatment
It was news to her
She was still moody all night before
the treatment and the symptoms
of her affliction included moodiness
and mood swings
The doctor insisted she was never
mentally ill
Her husband took her to the National
hospital the following week
They went with her previous files and
test results
They ran many tests
It was as if she was a completely
different person
The only things that agreed remained
the same on the files were her name,
age, marital status and other information
As for the medical test result,
nothing was the same
It was a miracle
Funny enough, it took a week after
she heard the news before she
felt the change in her system
That boiling emotion and constant
din was gone
It was strange at first but yes,
she got used to it after many
days
She delivered her baby in June 2020
The test results remained the same
She had been CHANGED or healed
completely
She reached out to the Brother in
Jeans and T-shirt to share her
testimony
The Brother In Jeans and T-shirt told
her 70% of the human body is made
of water and sometimes when we are
moved to cry deeply by the Holy
Spirit during a ministration (Which he
had seen often with mental cases)
hormones, body chemicals and
other elements gets transformed,
changed or healed by the power
of the Holy Spirit
He explained that he believed that
was what she experienced after
the conference
