His father was a migrant, originally from a French speaking country in west-Africa.

When his father moved into the country they now live in, he joined one of the major grocery stores as a butcher.

He was 23 years old and the job was a good one.

He lived in a one bedroom apartment in a slum area, and was able to save as much of his salary as he could.

When he turned 25, he sent for his younger brother to come and live with him.

Back home in their Country of origin, their family was doing very poorly.

This was the primary reason he took the bold decision to leave when he did.

He had only one brother, an auto-mechanic whom he was sure would equally excel if given the opportunity in this new country.

His brother arrived.

As he expected, his brother got a job at a car sales and repairs shop

They both shared the one room, managing their finances shrewdly and saving money with zeal.

Within two years, they felt they had enough to get married.

His father had met his mother at a grocery store

His mother was a local.

His father’s brother didn’t buy the idea.

He felt his brother was going to lose his roots by marrying a foreigner.

Why didn’t his brother travel to their country to pick a beautiful woman?

Why would his brother marry a woman whose culture, tradition, custom and language were alien to theirs?

His brother told him there was an advantage to marrying an indigene.

He would become a citizen of the country by marriage, and would be entitled to all the benefits the citizens of the country enjoyed.

The explanation made a lot of sense.

He supported his brother’s marriage to the citizen.

One year later, he went to their home country to pick a wife as he had always wanted.

He was supposed to return after one month.

He didn’t.

His brother wrote several letters to him but got no reply.

What could have happened to him?

He would have travelled to their country to investigate the matter but his new bride was pregnant and in need of serious care.

Several months later, his wife delivered a baby boy.

Few weeks later he travelled to their country.

He returned a month later with a baby girl

“When I got home they took me to see my brother, he had been committed to the care of a local shaman, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when I saw him, my brother had run mad!” He lamented

They said the girl he wanted to marry was already spoken for!

The family of the girl said “No”

But he went home with a lot of money and found a way to entice the girl to meet him in hotels and other places

His intention had always been to impregnate the girl and take her as his own

Two months after he started sleeping with the girl secretly, the girl got pregnant

The issue became a scandal

All my brother wanted was to take the pregnant lady as his wife and return to this country

But the lady’s fiancé felt robbed by my brother and cast a spell on both of them!

The very week I got there, my brother’s wife delivered a baby girl!

The option we had was either give the baby up for adoption or take responsibility for the baby, I chose to do the latter”

Though she was nursing a baby boy of her own, she took in the baby and nursed them as siblings

The children grew!

Many assumed they were twins

Nobody knew she gave birth to only one of them

When they were 14 years his father lost his job!

Everything went downhill from there

His father would wake up and blame his mother for all his woes

“You foolish woman, since you started going to that “clap” “clap” church, nothing has worked”

“Perhaps you were the one who casted a spell on my brother and wasted his destiny because he complained that I shouldn’t marry you”

“Why would you give birth to only one son for me? One child! I will still marry another wife, I want more children. You barren woman”

Most times he would be the one to defend his mother, especially whenever his father was turning violent!

It was the drink!

He drank to drown his frustrations and unleash mayhem on his only friend and helper

His father had set his mother up in business when the going was good

His mother had nursed the business from a small scale enterprise into a medium scale enterprise

It was the business that sponsored their education and kept food on the table and even a roof over their head

The moment his father lost his job and started feeling as if he was depending on his wife, the drinking started!

Whenever his father asked his mother for money and his mother said No!

War would break out!

His mother was very determined to keep her business afloat and was very frugal with her expenses, though his father had previously praised and celebrated his mother for her discipline, he turned the table around and started calling his mother a stingy woman and an ingrate

It is true that his mother became Born Again and joined a Pentecostal church

His Father was born into another denomination but he rarely even goes to church apart from New year Eve, first Sunday of the Year and special occasions

Once in a while his father would get a temporary job and bring home some money!

Normalcy would resume and he would become the greatest father and husband in the world, but once he runs out of cash and the temporary job was over

The monster would come back to the dance!

That afternoon, they (his mother, himself and his sister) returned from church around noon

His father had been at home all morning watching television

His father barely grunted when they greeted him

When they got home, his mother went straight to the Kitchen to cook the traditional “Sunday Rice”

After lunch, his father became restless

He started pacing the sitting room floor and muttering to himself

Suddenly his father called his mother and said “I am tired of my life, I want to die, I want to go! I cannot continue to live like this! Why would I be living like the dead! I would rather be dead and gone than stay in this world of suffering!”

His mother tried to calm his Father down

He looked at his father and smiled inwardly, he was sure his father was trying to psychologically own his mother so that he can get some money with which he would drink as usual!

His father suddenly stopped and held his heart!

It was like watching the dance of the Matador!

He twisted, screamed “My chest, my chest!”

He fell down and his tongue pushed out of his mouth with his eyes bulging!

He screamed!

His sister screamed!

His mother screamed!

His Father was dead!

He quickly knelt down to listen to his Father’s heartbeat

Nothing!

Ha!

A fluid was running down his Father’s nose

It was yellowish and green

He looked up and shouted “Mummy! Daddy is dead!”

“Mummy, Daddy is dead!”

His sister started crying

His mother was silent for a while

She kept looking at the body on the floor with a distant look

“Mummy, who should I call? What do I do?”

He was the man of the house now, the women have given in to emotion, he needed to take charge!

His mother did the most extraordinary thing

His mother walked to his Father’s body and said “The brother in Jeans and T-Shirt told us today in church that we are life giving spirits and not living souls! He said I can give life to others and quicken others to live because of the nature I have in Christ Jesus! I believe this!”

By this time, his Father had been dead for at least 30 minutes

His mother laid hands on his Father and said “Death, loose your hold on my husband, I command you to come to life now so and so!”

And just like that, without any drama!

His Father’s tongue receded back into his mouth as if one was pressing down a radio antenna

His eyes opened, he pulled himself to a sitting position and started coughing

Oh! God.

Oh! God.

Oh! God!

His father had tears in his eyes, though he said he was not crying!

His mother asked his Father, How are you, are you fine now?

“What happened to me?”

“What happened to me?”

His father kept saying over and over

His mother explained what happened!

His father was terrified!

I died!

I died!

Would you like to give your life to Jesus right now?

His father screamed “Yes”

His mother led his Father to Christ!

He called the brother in Jeans and T-Shirt to share the testimony

Praise the Lord
