Unthinkable

They were best friends in their university 
days 
She crushed on him so much that she 
eventually asked him out 
He told her he couldn't date her because 
when he prayed about them being together 
He was convinced without a doubt that she 
was not his woman but he made sure she 
didn't feel bad about it at all  
They had firm boundaries 
Their friendship started when they were 
in 100 level 
He was the loud type, the one that was 
brilliant and rubs it in the face of everybody 
She was the quiet type, the one with the 
photographic memory 
She had a GPA of 5.0 after the first semester 
exams 
He had a GPA of 4.78 
Even the lecturers were shocked 
Who was this girl? 
When they resumed for the second semester, 
he sought her out to congratulate her 
He saw it as a competition 
She saw his approach as condescending and 
told him off 
Then they had a course on phonetics 
It was a course she was extremely good at 
since she was in secondary school 
She had her own dictionary and audio CD 
which she listened to often 
She could transcribe any word with precision 
Her teachers were always in awe of her 
phonetic abilities 
It was the opposite for him 
He hated phonetics and the lecturer taking 
them was also quite poor at it 
He knew he wouldn't fail it but a poor 
result would lower his CGPA down
 It was a three-unit course 
So he turned to her with humility one afternoon in the library 
He offered to pay her to learn phonetics 
from her
She decided to teach him but for free
She was beginning to feel exposed by the 
attention some students were giving her 
due to her grade 
She felt his "arrogance" would help keep the 
attention in check 
They met every day at the library overflow 
and before long their discussions extended 
beyond academics 
From that second semester of 100 level until 
they graduated, they both led the class 
Academically they were miles ahead of the 
whole class 
He didn't date anybody and neither did she 
Twice they kissed 
The first time was valentines day of their 
300 level 
He told her he wanted to kiss her just to 
know what a kiss felt like 
She considered it and decided it wouldn't be 
the worst thing if he was her first kiss 
She was 17 and he was 19 
They kissed by the steps of arts studio 
The second time they kissed was when they 
finished their final exams 
He was overcome with emotion at the 
prospect of them parting ways and kissed her 
She kissed him too but it was a goodbye kiss 
She was heading to the USA for her masters 
while he was going to work on his father's 
farm in Ogun State 
They served in different states and only 
chatted twice
His girlfriend refused to understand 
She kept screaming that he had to drop the 
mad girl 
He tried to explain what was going on 
He even introduced her to his bestie's parents 
and took her along to see his bestie on 
two occasions 
But she couldn't change her stance on the 
issue
"Only God knows the source of her parent's 
wealth or what they used her to do? 
Only God knows what she had dabbled into 
This is how unfortunate people disturb the 
reality of others, they had to spread their 
venom to others 
Stop seeing her, you are not a doctor 
They are using you"
He knew it was too much to ask 
His bestie's sickness was like a black hole 
It was sapping everybody and pulling 
everybody into its misery 
Her parents were spending so much seeking 
the best help 
All he was required to do was listen to her 
over the phone or sit with her once in a while
He was the only one she was talking to in 
the whole world outside of family 
Seven weeks after her parents darkened his door 
She called him one day and said she wanted 
to go to the beach 
It was a big leap, a big break, a big deal 
The psychiatrist had told them she would 
eventually leave the past and start living again 
The beach idea was a shift from the past to 
the future 
She had forgotten she hated the light and all 
He went home to pick her 
He had not been to the beach in years 
They went to a supermarket to buy beach stuff 
Wears, mat, food, drinks and all
They got to the beach around 10 am on a 
Sunday 
She was happy 
They walked into the sea hand in hand 
She started talking about America and how 
lonely she was 
She told him she browsed the internet a lot 
somehow sank her into depression 
She told him about a dark being that comes 
to torment her every day 
She said light bulbs and everything would 
break when the being comes 
The being told her never to walk in the sun 
or light again or it would kill her 
He didn't know if to believe her words or not 
She was not so mentally stable yet but 
he saw sunshine and euphoria in her face
They left the beach around 5 pm 
He drove her home 
When they got to her parent's house 
He parked and was alighting from the car 
when he heard a patter of footsteps 
Before he could make sense of what was 
going on 
He heard shouts and cries
 It was his "fiance" and two of her friends
They were supported by two mobile 
policemen 
His fiance dragged his bestie out of the car 
and decorated her face with hot slaps 
The mobile police people stopped him 
from interfering 
His fiance kept screaming "Husband snatcher, 
mad woman, "mentaloo", it was a very very 
bad day
By the time they were done his bestie was 
practically naked 
The scene attracted a crowd 
His bestie's parents had to rush out to 
rescue their daughter
Her father and mother were in tears as
they dragged their daughter from the claws
of his fiance
He was too embarrassed to speak 
He cried his eyes out that day 
When he got home his fiance was waiting 
She was all puffed up waiting for war
He just ignored her, went into his room and 
locked himself in 
His bestie never called him again 
He called her parents to apologize 
They told him they understood but they 
would like him to keep his distance 
The next day his bestie was committed 
into a psychiatric hospital 
It was a nightmare for him 
Two weeks of an agonizing wait to see or 
hear from her 
His fiance kept calling and sending messages 
but for him, that was a closed-door 
Eventually he got an email from his bestie 
She said her phone was taken from her and all 
She apologized and thanked him for 
his support 
Her writing made him cry 
She was discharged after another two weeks 
She returned to the USA 
She somehow totally recovered 
But he couldn't move on with his fiance 
She had done the unthinkable and nothing
 could change his mind 
After weeks of begging and apologizing
the engagement was called off 
His heart was broken for a lot of reasons 
But chief of all was how things ended 
between him and his bestie 
In 2018 he traveled to the USA on behalf 
of his father on a business trip 
He called his bestie and they met it had 
been two years since the incident 
She was in New Jersey while he was in 
Texas 
She flew down to see him 
That night, at the hotel, he kissed her for 
the third time 
She cried 
She didn't know if to kiss him back or run away 
She felt she was responsible for his ruined 
relationship and didn't want to be labeled
a husband snatcher 
Eventually, she responded to his kiss 
She responded eagerly and he took it as 
an "I want more" 
She didn't protest when he dragged her 
to his room 
That was how they happened 
They were married a year later (Feb 2019) 
Today, 01/06/2020 she delivered a baby girl

PS: The brother in Jeans and T-shirt met
her at the psychiatric hospital after the 
"fiance" had beaten her up
She was so shaken by the incident that
she refused to eat for many days
Everybody got concerned
She needed to eat in order to take her drugs
But she had been shamed and embarrassed
due to her situation and she felt it was
better to die than live on in shame
She never for once thought she would
be involved in such a situation that would
get her beaten up over a man
She was also missing her bestie
He was really a lifeline and the abrupt
separation caused her to reel
Her father was given the phone number
of the Brother in Jeans and T-shirt
A call was placed and he showed up
When she saw him she took off
She ran into the toilet and locked
herself in
Nobody could get her to open the door
Eventually, the Brother in Jeans and 
T-shirt told the doctors and nurses
to calm down
He walked over to the bathroom door 
and said "Open the door now or I will
leave and I will not come back"
He waited a while
Everywhere was silent
Then they heard a click as she opened
the door
She was on her knees, crying
He laid hands on her and commanded the
darkness to leave her
She fell on her face and laid there for 
a while
About five minutes later, she opened her
eyes
The Bother in Jeans and T-shirt pulled
her to her feet and laid his hands on her
head the second time
She started praying in tongues
Her deliverance was complete
That same day, she sent her bestie the
email
Joy was restored to her reality.

I have seen a couple who confirmed that
they were supposed to be together get
married and yet the marriage failed
I have seen a couple who didn't pray at all 
whose marriages lasted for a lifetime
Am I saying do not pray? No.
Please pray but both partners must be
willing to give their all selflessly for
the union to work
