A walk of One
=WHATABOUTISM
(John 21:19-22)
The meeting was over.
The staff members were deliberating
over the details of the meeting
The MD and the secretary were going
through the minutes.
A few minutes later, the MD turned to Peter,
one of the Senior Managers: “Hey, Pete!
Follow me!”
Peter looked up from his iPad.
He saw the MD walking towards the door.
He turned around and saw John,
another Senior Manager working on
his laptop.
Just as the MD was about to exit the
conference room, Peter calls out to him,
“Boss! What about John? Should he
follow you too?”
The MD paused at the door for a few
seconds.
He turned around slowly.
“Excuse me?” Peter stood there, with a
sheepish look on his face.
“What did you say?”
MD took off his glasses to stare straight
into Peter’s eyes. “Erm… I was just
wondering about John sir.
You asked me to follow you, but you
didn’t tell him anything!” MD sighed.
“So?” Peter scratched his head.
“I was just thinking you’ll ask him to
follow too, sir. Or at least give him
an assignment to do…”
MD asked, “How is that your concern?
Why don’t you just do as I ask you
and leave John?
What is your business with John?
You follow me!”
And the MD walks out of the room,
with Peter running after him…
We have this tendency to be more
comfortable in crowds.
We don’t want to be in the minority or alone.
I remember when I was in secondary
school and I was told I’d be on detention
over the weekend, I’d start hoping we’d
be many!
So on Friday when names are called and
we’re about 20, I feel ok. But if we’re
just 4- disaster! Embarrassment!
There’s comfort in the crowd…
Unfortunately, God doesn’t work
like that: He gives us different
assignments per time.
He cuts off branches from us that
would hinder growth.
Mine may be the low branches, yours
may be the topmost branches.
Isaiah wrote, “When I called Abraham,
I called him ALONE”- Isaiah 51:2.
That diversity is the beauty of Christianity.
I watch football, I’m a fan of
Manchester United.
I have a friend who stopped watching
soccer. When I asked why, he said,
“God told me to stop watching”.
I understood perfectly.
God has also told me to stop wearing
jewelry before, and I stopped.
My friend didn’t ask God, “You ask
me to stop watching soccer:
what about Harry?”
God tells people what he wants them
to do ALONE, just like Jesus told Peter,
“FOLLOW ME”.
The problem is, we find a way to
bring “Whataboutism” into it, just as
Peter did. We ask, “What about John?
You asked me to stop wearing jewelry-
what about Pamela? You asked me to
never wear a tattoo- what about Simon?
You asked me to read 10 chapters of
scripture and pray an hour daily-
what about Frank?”
It’s not a group thing, sir.
It’s not a one-size-fits-all, ma’am.
That is why there is so much diversity
amongst Christians: each is dealt with
by the Holy Spirit privately.
We don’t all look alike, dress alike,
talk alike.
Diversity is God’s plan- that was one
of the reason he changed languages
at the Tower of Babel.
Let us stop comparing ourselves
with others.
Whatever the Holy Spirit demands of you,
please yield to Him.
Like Mary told the porters at the marriage
in Cana, “Whatever He tells you to do,
DO IT!” -John 2:5.
Don’t concern yourself with whatever
instructions He gives your brother,
don’t concern yourself with whatever
He tells your sister to do.
Don’t bring whataboutism into it!
Shalom.

GSW: I love this exposition so much
God bless Pastor Haruna Daniels
There are many churches where
God would tell the Pastor or G.O
something for his own growth and
He or she would then go on and
make such an instruction a law
for every member
God is not interested in herd mentality
God is always interested in dealing
with his children personally so that
they can grow and become familiar
with his voice
This one might wear trousers, and
God might tell you not to
This one might wear Jeans and God
might tell you not to
This one might wear an earring and
God might tell you not to
It doesn't make the one wearing a
sinner or ungodly
Walking with God has nothing to do
with comparing yourself with others
It is always the walk of One with
The One!
Religion delights in numbers but Christ
is the One who never leaves the One
Behind!
Walk with him and please let others
walk with him as He guides them too
