Edge of darkness

His mother didn't know the offense 
she committed 
This was a child whose father ran off 
when he was barely five years old 
She single-handedly trained him by doing 
so many things
 Working as a teacher, making chin-chin 
and yes at a point driving a taxi in Lagos 
All she had was her boys 
She noticed he was a mathematical genius 
when he was eight years old 
Because of her hustle, she barely paid 
attention to his homework, then she went 
for his end of the year party in school and 
saw him clear all the prizes and also get a 
double promotion from primary 3 to 
primary 5 his teachers told her he was a 
genius 
Apart from his books, he was very quiet 
and deeply introverted When he was ten 
years old, she remarried 
She had married her first husband at the 
age of 22 and waited ten years for him to 
return 
It was time to move on 
She carried him and his brother along 
She made them realize that she couldn't 
remain single all her life 
As usual, he didn't say much 
He had always been like that about life 
Whatever he couldn't control, he would 
shrug and take to the sidelines 
Her new husband was a widow, a teacher 
and a good Christian
His wife died giving birth to their second 
child, so he came into the union with his 
two children too 
They were not rich but they were good 
parents 
He was the most brilliant of all the children 
he spent four years in the secondary 
school and cleared his WAEC exam at 
the age of 15
Federal institutions insisted he must be 16 
before offering him admission 
He cried bitterly when he was told 
Three days later he told her about a private 
University that was ready to offer him 
admission 
They were living in a room and a parlour 
How would they afford the fees? 
Her husband sold his land in ikorodu and gave 
her the money to pay for his first, second 
and third year 
She took a cooperative loan to pay for his 
final year He studied economics and 
graduated with a first-class 
Immediately after he graduated he started 
clamoring to school abroad
She wasn't fazed She told him to seek 
scholarship and/or grant 
Anything to help with the cost 
He eventually got a good opportunity in 
Canada 
She and his stepfather ran around and 
supported him with all their savings 
He was destined for great things 
This was very obvious to all
When he got to Canada he shone like a star 
Within three years he had completed his 
Masters and was already into his Ph.D 
He was also offered a good position in 
the University as a part-time (assistant) 
lecturer 
He started making money 
Then he called his mother out of the blue 
and told her he would be getting married 
He called on a Wednesday and informed 
her the wedding was going to hold the 
following Saturday 
She had not even met the lady 
She was told the lady went to the same 
university with him and he had been asking 
her out for over five years 
It was a bit confusing 
He had never told her about any girl before 
and she had always assumed that because 
of his bookwormish nature, he would marry 
whenever he felt he was ready 
She had to rely on his younger brother for 
information 
His younger brother told her the lady was 
not good at all! 
He said they (he and his older brother) 
went to check the lady at home one day 
(While he was still asking her out and the 
lady left them in the sitting room with her 
boyfriend as at that time to have sex in 
the room while they sat patiently in the 
sitting room for her to be done. 
He said he tried everything to get his brother 
to forget about the lady after then but his 
brother wouldn't listen! the lady was two 
years older than him (She was a twin) 
and she treated his brother like a nuisance! 
She calls his brother "Tolotolo" to his face, 
meaning he was foolish and slow on the 
uptake 
His brother always smiled and shrugs it off 
Then there was the lady's mother, a 
socialite woman whose mouth was quick 
to insult 
Everything his mother heard convinced 
her things were not well with her son 
She tried calling him from that Wednesday
Just to have a mother and son discussion 
and be brought properly into the picture 
Her son didn't pick her call 
He read and ignored her Whatsapp messages 
He sent pictures on Sunday, a day after 
the wedding 
He saw their son surrounded by the 
bride's mother, twin sister and younger
brother All in Canada She and his stepfather 
and his younger ones were informed barely 
three days to the event and the bride's 
family were all at the event 
It was too odd When he eventually picked 
her call, the first thing he said was 
"My wife is listening in on the extension ma"
She couldn't talk to him from that point on
 privately 
His wife would always be on the call 
She decided to call his wife and talk to her, 
as a mother-in-law should 
She felt since they had gotten married, 
she should let it be known that she was 
happy for them and at peace with them
While they were talking, his wife let it slip 
that he had been taking care of her and 
her folks very well He sponsored them 
to Canada for the wedding, paid her
 mother 50,000 stipends monthly and 
also gives her siblings 25K monthly 
allowance each 
The words were like a dagger in heart! 
Her son had never sent her anything, 
not a dime 
He had never even written to say thank 
you to  her and her stepfather for their 
sacrifice over him 
They were getting older and still paying 
the school fees of his siblings 
Her son had never offered to help in any 
way 
It was a bitter wound in her heart
Then her son came to Nigeria 
His mother-in-law and his wife's siblings 
picked him up at the airport 
He bought a car for his mother-in-law 
He called her immediately he arrived 
that he would be coming to see her 
the following day 
She waited and waited 
He didn't show His wife was pregnant at 
the time and couldn't travel with him 
His wife's twin sister started staying with 
him in the hotel he lodged in from 6 AM 
till 10 PM every day 
It was as if they were determined not to 
give him breathing space to think or act 
on his own 
He called his childhood friend on the third 
week after his arrival when he had run out 
of money to pay for hotel accommodation 
He wanted to know if he could stay with 
the friend for a few days until he completed 
the research he came home to do 
The friend welcomed him with open arms 
It was the friend that called
her to greet her on the return of her son and 
to inform her that her son had moved into 
one of the rooms of his three-bedroom flat 
That was when she told the friend the 
whole story 
She said she didn't know what they did to 
her son or told her son 
Her son had practically abandoned her 
She lamented for hours and told the friend 
all her efforts and prayers 
She was sure her son was in bondage 
He couldn't have become so callous overnight 
without some spiritual inducement 
She said she had booked an appointment 
with a GO who would pray with her but 
Covid-19 had put that plan on hold 
She wept bitterly 
The friend had known the family since they 
were teenagers 
The friend was heartbroken too 
That night, the friend waited until the wife's 
twin sister left 
The friend called him and talked to him as 
a brother to another "Why are you doing this 
to your mother?
What offense had she committed that made 
you treat her so?
His response shocked his friend
He said "I cannot help it, I am crying inside 
but i cannot help it.
i have this fear in me, i see things and feel 
strange things whenever
i think of my mother and my family
The only time I feel at rest is when I give
 my wife and her family
whatever they wanted from me
You are not married, you cannot 
understand!"
That was where they left the issue that night
The conversation made no sense to his friend 
but what could he do?
He was the "unmarried" one!
He returned to Canada at the end of April 
2019
He was lucky to get a seat on an evacuation 
flight
The week after he left, another friend of his 
in Canada
whom his friend spoke with sent in some 
information about him and his wife
His wife cheats on him blatantly
The pregnancy was most likely not his own
This got his friend very concerned
His friend reached out to the Brother in 
Jeans and T-shirt
He explained everything he knew about 
the matter
He was sure something fishy was going 
on
The brother in jeans and T-shirt met with 
his mother
the following weekend
They talked
She was a born again Christian who would 
have suffered it all for the sake of Christ and 
making heaven
The Brother in Jeans and T-shirt told her 
the name of Jesus was given to believers to 
set the captives free
They prayed together in tongues for an hour
Then they agreed together in the name of 
Jesus and rubbished the enchantment and 
divination they commanded the eye of 
understanding of her son to be opened
They ordered the strangers to depart with 
their works of iniquity
Three days later, he called his mother
His wife had left with the pregnancy
She told him the real owner of the 
pregnancy was in Toronto and she was 
tired of lying to him
She dropped that morning while he was 
at work packed her things and left
He was free!
He cried and cried and cried on the phone
He couldn't explain what had happened 
to him for the past three years
He apologized and begged for forgiveness
His mother told him about the brother in 
Jeans and T-shirt
This morning, 8th June 2020
He called to say thank you
They discussed as brothers
He gave his life to Christ and got filled 
with the Holy Host
The door to affliction was shut forever
Hallelujah!!!

PS: Many wonder why i shout always
about getting filled with the Holy Spirit
Some Christian still argue that it wasn't
meant for all believers
When God called them gods, they
refused to believe it too!
And it led to their undoing!
Speaking in tongues is for all believers
it prevents you from falling prey of
demons and their agents

blasphemy for stating that I am the 
Son of God?"
If you continue to insist you want to be
a mere mortal, the fate of mere men awaits!
