Morality and Spirituality Are Not the Same Thing
Moses brought the children of Israel the law. The Law is a set of rules that govern human behaviour and are created and enforced by social or governmental institutions. He also brought them instructions on religious rites and levitical conduct but the law was only useful for the fact that it helps to set the human society in order. It made it clear that some forms of behaviour are acceptable while others were not but the law does not make anyone righteous, it did not succeed in making anyone live the right way, it provided punishment for sin and made people became conscious of misdeeds and sin but sin consciousness only made men aware of their own failings and how far away they had fallen from God.
Romans 3:20 says "Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin." It is not unusual to see believers praying for forgiveness of their sins and acknowledging their misdeeds. "Have mercy upon me O Lord, for I am a sinner" was considered a prayer of humility and contrition under the law. David in Psalm 51 revealed to us the mindset of the moral man, have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. For a moralist, his continuous acknowledgment of sin and plea for forgiveness is considered being "Spiritual" It is not unusual for you to hear a pastor saying he stayed on his knees all night pleading for forgiveness of sin from God as a result of the sin and decadence he or she is observing in a country. It was the playbook of religious people regardless of their religion. This is why a Muslim cleric, a Pastor, a Jewish priest and a Buddhist can all sit together in a room and discover that they have more in common than most people. Religion is very key to moral behaviour. Many believe there cannot be a moral law, without a moral law giver (God). The Old Testament therefore spoke of a nation that struggled with its sin nature as against the instructions of the moral lawgiver and as a result of its persistent failures went through unending cycles of sin - punishment - repentance and forgiveness. The New Testament however was different. John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. The law failed in all its endeavours, it did not bring eternal life, it did not destroy sin, it did not make man better than he was in any way. It led to hypocrisy. People started pretending to act right when they find themselves in the presence of authority figures who could assess and reward them according to their behaviour but whenever they had no witnesses, people acted the way they wanted. They acted out their "freedom".For the law, was a mental prison many find their natural impulses rebelling against. It was easily set aside in the face of innate desires. For example, David saw Bathsheba naked and forgot all about the law and its spirituality. The same David wanted to commit paternity fraud to cover his sin but against a deeply moral and dedicated Uriah, his attempts failed. He ended up killing Uriah, a classic example of how natural impulses easily overcome morality whenever the two experience a clash. Basic Instint does not understand restraint and control.
In the voice of Cersei Lannister, "Knowledge is not power...Power is Power" Power in the hand of an immoral person like Jezebel will lead to the death of a moral person like Naboth, every time even Elijah was not spared! Morality created weak men. In the battle for survival, where men are fighting for resources and the dominion of nations, history taught us that the most ruthless, not the most moral wins. Nebuchadnezzar, Darius, Ghengis Khan, Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, Hitler, The USA and their use of the Atomic Bomb against Hiroshima and Nagasaki (it was a moral dilemma but they overcame it by refusing to be moral), slavery and slave trade, colonization and the perpetual control of African resources, sterilization of Native American women, Introduction of HIV/AIDS to Africa, Segregation, discrimination, racism, lawfare, the release of Covid Virus for financial, political gain and population control, the Arab wave and other covert operations of world powers, the weaponization of religion and psychological warfare against the people, same-sex advocacy and laws as we see today in the west etc are obvious examples of the domination of instinct and nature over morality.
Morality is weak Bishops preached in support of slavery, slave ownership and the slave trade. Good people do evil when they find it to be to their advantage. God knows this and this is why he stated clearly that all our self-righteousness is filthy rags in his sight. The solution to the human condition therefore was not the law or morality it was spirituality.
Man was Spiritual before the fall , he became moral after the fall but morality did not give him eternal life , Jesus then came to give mankind spirituality so that man may be restored to his original state in which he was wholly ruled by the Spirit.
This is why Christians are different, Jesus did not give those who believe in him a moral law like Moses, he gave us the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, in the Book of Acts chapter two, like a mighty rushing wind we saw cloven tongues of fire descending from ABOVE upon those who have given their lives to the Lord Jesus. We saw them receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues, seeing visions, healing the sick, raising the dead, walking in divine wisdom, knowledge and understanding, bilocating, prophesying, controlling the elements, shape-shifting and experiencing divine transportation. We saw the difference between the moral man and the spiritual man. Moses knew the law was not sufficient, for this reason, he released his spirit upon 70 elders of Israel so that they could govern with him. For there is a spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding! Spirituality therefore is miles apart from morality. A moral man cannot defeat evil, a spiritual man has already defeated evil. A moral man cannot be good, a spiritual man was born of goodness and he overcomes evil easily with good. A moral man can be afflicted by dark extra-mundane forces, a spiritual man is Lord over every force, both in the physical and the metaphysical. A man who keeps the law is powerless against the wiles of the evil one, a good example is Job, a man of the Spirit will defeat the devil even when he is hungry and alone, a good example is Jesus when he took on the devil during his temptation.
Spirituality is being born of the Spirit and being ruled and led by the Spirit. Morality is being born of the flesh and being ruled and led by a moral code. A believer who is spiritual and led by the spirit does right by default, it is in His or her nature to please God. Sometimes pleasing God will mean displeasing men, as we saw over and again in the life of Jesus. A spirit-filled believer has no other master, he has an audience of God and to that God, he or she belongs for life. God is spirit and those who unite themselves with Him are one with him in Spirit!
PS: I often hear believers say "I am a good person, why is this happening to me" and I shake my head. They lack understanding, the Bible states clearly that God does not want us to be good. God told Adam, do not eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of "Good" and "Evil" It was clearly written in the Bible, clearly stated God does not want us to be GOOD. Being good was the consequence nature of the fallen man after he had eaten the forbidden fruit. God wants us to be as He is. God is Spirit, Adam was Spirit before the fall forced him to embrace morality as a tool of control "So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”[f]; the last Adam (Jesus), a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man." Let us bear the image of the heavenly man. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. This is my second invitation to all to join PSSBC School 24, classes start in January 2025.
