Overwhelmed

He couldn't tell exactly what attracted 
her to him 
They met one evening in front of the 
Computer lab while they were both 
undergraduates 
She was studying accounting 
He was studying Computer Science 
Computer Appreciation was a general 
course they had in common 
Students from other departments had 
to come to the laboratory to take the 
course 
He found himself seated next to her 
She caught his attention in a strange way 
It was pure chemistry 
He couldn't stop looking at her deliriously 
She caught him staring and she smiled 
back 
His heart melted like wax 
He just knew she was the one 
Throughout the lecture, he kept rehearsing 
his lines "Erm, can I buy you lunch?" 
"Hi, My name is so and so, can I be 
your boyfriend?" 
Ladies don't know how hard it is for 
a guy who had already fallen for them 
to speak up 
It was easy talking to someone whose 
"no" or "Go away" you can afford 
When you really want to be with someone, 
you'd rather suffer in silence than get 
a cold turkey "No" 
The fire she had lit on the inside of him 
was not the type to keep quiet about 
When he got 300 level, his mother 
especially gave him some money for
"taking his babe out" 
He didn't have any babe 
He had never had one 
He was an especially shy and timid 
person 
He never expected that he would fall 
in love 
Girls especially make him nervous 
He doesn't want to be embarrassed 
by anyone but she was worth the effort 
After the class he watched her sashay off 
He was enthralled but he was also 
tongue-tied 
Later that afternoon he saw her again, 
this time she was with a lady from his class 
The next day, he asked the lady about her 
The lady said they were roommates 
The next morning he went to the cafeteria 
by 7am, bought her breakfast and paid 
to have it delivered to her room with a note 
bearing his name and phone number 
He waited in the cafeteria until the 
delivery was done 
He didn't know what he was waiting for 
but the answer came in form of a 
phone call some minutes later 
She called to say thank you 
That was how they started going out 
Within a month, they were inseparable 
He did her bidding and she did his wish 
It was like riding the rainbow until they 
graduated 
She was posted to Kebbi state for her NYSC 
He was posted to Lagos 
It was the first time they were
really apart since they started going out 
During the only school break they had 
while dating, they were in each other's 
world 
Their families were located in Ibadan 
He was at Ijokodo 
She was at Bodija Estate 
Both of them are firstborns and their 
parents were very happy to see them
in the relationship 
Her father was an engineer
 He had a firm that deals with the 
manufacture of electrical appliances 
and cables 
His father was a successful building 
contractor both families were respectable 
They were practically in each other's 
ears throughout her journey 
He called as many times as he could 
He also reported to the orientation 
camp in Lagos 
The orientation camp was not as much 
fun as she imagined 
She was ill for most of the three weeks 
She didn't know what she ate exactly 
but the sickness left her weak and 
miserable 
One of her fellow corp's member, a medical 
doctor by training, took an interest in her 
He and some other doctors came to 
the sickbay often to see the sick and 
offer some help 
He helped her through that season of 
sickness 
She didn't tell her boyfriend about the
sickness 
She felt there was no point getting him 
worried unnecessarily 
After the three weeks, she was placed 
at a secondary school for her primary 
place of assignment 
The doctor was placed in the same school 
too 
The doctor had a relationship back 
east too 
Both of them somehow started sleeping 
with each other 
It wasn't planned 
It wasn't deliberate 
It was something exciting to do 
It was also something she had no plan 
of sharing with anybody 
The doctor was very careful and so 
was she 
Since her future seemed already set, 
why not have some fun and enjoy her
life? 
Nobody was hurt and she was technically 
not married yet... 
Her relationship with the doctor was hot 
and sizzling 
All they did was cook, talk, and have sex 
It was more like a friend with benefits 
thing but apart from the relationship he 
had at home, he didn't date any other
person around them 
People see them together and consider 
them to be friends 
They were quick to tell people there was 
nothing romantic between them 
She liked it because it didn't involve words 
There was no verbal transaction between 
them when it all started 
He came to her room one Saturday 
morning and while playing a game of 
cards, things got out of hand 
She could have said no and he could 
have stopped but neither of them did that 
Technically, they were just sex buddies 
Her man called often and she played 
her cards very right 
She was in a bubble but she
was very mindful of preserving the future 
She didn't even give him a hint 
Their conversations and phone calls went 
on like clockwork 
Sometimes while she was on the phone 
with him, her partner in crime would be 
doing things to her body that could 
cause her to explode 
She would grit her teeth and speak on 
or cut the call pretending it was a network
issue 
She examined her heart several times 
and realized she didn't love the doctor 
She wouldn't even consider marrying him 
She was just bored and she wanted to 
keep the doctor's attention while they 
were in that village
Days melted into months 
In December 2018, she traveled home 
for the Christmas holidays 
She had told her boyfriend she would 
be coming home 
Called him on the phone to tell him the 
good news 
He was as excited as she was 
Usually, he would be waiting for her 
at the motor park in his car to drive 
her home 
When her bus got to Ibadan, he wasn't 
there She called his phone number 
several times, it didn't go through 
When she got home, she expected 
him to be waiting for her 
He was not there 
It was very much unlike him 
She waited till the following morning 
and drove down to his parent's house 
She met his mother 
She was welcomed joyfully 
She asked where her man was 
Her man's mother said he was in church 
He had somehow become a born again 
Christian while at the NYSC camp and 
he had gone to a village with his fellow 
believers to share the gospel 
She couldn't believe it 
He never gave her any indication that 
such was going on in his life 
The two families were of the same 
religion and that was one of the reasons 
she was so confident that he was the 
one for her 
Her father wouldn't allow her to marry 
a Christian 
He knew that and she suspected that was 
why he kept quiet about his conversion 
She needed to see him 
She needed to see for herself the madness 
he got himself involved in 
Eventually, his mother called her on 
December 23 that he was home 
He didn't even bother to call her himself 
She waited for his call, he didn't call 
She got angry 
Why would he take her for granted that way? 
She got to his parent's house 
The security guard let her in 
She saw him standing by the car smiling 
sheepishly 
She wanted to curse him, yell at him, 
scream at him 
He had been so unfair to her 
She opened her mouth to speak 
She couldn't explain what happened next 
A sudden dread fell over her 
She fell on her knees and began to cry 
She started confessing everything she had 
been doing behind him 
She wanted to stop, to shut her mouth but 
she couldn't 
She spoke on and on His parents were in 
the garden in their compound 
His father was playing table tennis with 
his older sister 
They rushed down to see what was going on 
As soon as they touched her 
They fell under the anointing 
It lasted for about forty-five minutes 
When she was done, she picked
her bag and left 
That was the end of the relationship 

PS: His parents and family members were 
the first members of his fellowship 
The fellowship began in their compound 
In 2019, he started his ministry and the 
power of the Holy Spirit found expression 
in all that he did
He said he was about to call her one 
evening when he fell into a trance
He saw himself in her room at her 
primary place of assignment
She was sleeping with the doctor
He said he wanted to call her and tell 
her what he saw but the Holy
Spirit restrained him
He decided to stop calling her since 
she had moved on to be another
person
Only for the drama that happened in 
his parent's house to take place
The drama led to the conversion of 
his parents and siblings and the
birth of his ministry
The Holy Spirit had a reason for 
everything
